Sycamore Gardens
The Purpose
Sycamore Gardens Caring for people with memory loss, Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia is an area of focus for Mennonite Memorial Home. Sycamore Gardens was designed to serve these residents. It offers an outdoor therapeutic walkway and garden area completely enclosed and is directly attached to our special care units.

Frequent interaction with fresh air, sunshine, living plants and animals are beneficial to people of all physical and mental capacities. It is especially therapeutic to the person with dementia, who cannot fully understand the events happening around them, but can instinctively connect with and draw comfort from nature. Some residents will actively participate in horticultural activities or daily living activities such as ranking leaves. Others may simply walk through the winding paths, enjoying the sights, the smells, the natural activity and sunshine. Specific benefits include increased feeling of self-worth, improved health and strength, and decreased anxiety and depression.

This project was paid for through fundraiser's and donations made by individuals in our communities and people who support the Mennonite Memorial Home. Our Women's Service Group has raised several thousands of dollars and contributed a large portion to the cost.
